4 of Roger Puta's SP Shots including 4449
Author: MartyBernard

1. and 2. Could someone pinpoint the location.  What I have so far as a caption is: SP 4449, the Disney Daylight, when the locomotive and a short train ran from Portland to L.A. for the filming of Tough Guys taken in the Sacramento River Canyon below Dunsmuir in March 1986.

3. and 4. Could someone pinpoint the location.  What I have so far as a caption is: SP unknown diesel number taken in the Sacramento River Canyon below Dunsmuir in March 1986.

Thanks,
Marty Bernard

Picture 1   was just coming out of the first tunnel on the dam bypass, just west or south of Delta on the way to Lakehead. I was the pilot on it from K Falls to Dunsmuir.

Picture 2  Salt Creek Bridge

Picture 3   Same as No. 1

Picture 4   Same as No. 2

Four ACES in that hand!  Thanks for sharing these gems by Roger.  My favorite's #2 closely followed by #3.  That smoke in the third shot is something else!

Four of a kind, Aces all indeed,  I normally do not like most fan trip photos because .......well they look like fan trip photos. But 4449's matching consist here only makes me wish there were more matching cars. What a beauty !
It looks like model. The following tunnel motors with smoke "burp" is classic too. Both sets stand on there own.
Thanks Marty!

Smoke was caused by change over from many miles in dynamic brake to power for the uphill run to Lakehead.  Just clearing their throats.  Sphogger

This is exactly correct. Two and four are not on the Salt Creek Trestle, but over the Sacramento River.

Also of note, the intermediate signal in pictures one and three was removed a few months ago.

Nice pics.

If you're motivated, Marty, it might be nice to see a higher resolution crop of the smoke coming out of that tunnel...

I've driven through here many times, and have always found the drive unsatisfactory, and have never found a good spot to chill where I can watch trains if I'm in the mood for a break.  I'd like to identify a few places where I could stop for an hour and watch trains, this looks like it might be a nice vantage point.

Looking at Google Maps, I'm guessing the photos were taken on a street called "Lakeshore Drive" -- it is at a sharp bend in the river, with a view upriver to the tunnel and downriver to the bridge.  Does anyone know if there is still a view from Lakeshore Drive?

Ted, even thought I scanned Roger's slide at the native resolution of my scanner (4000 dpi) the scan when enlarged is quite grainy.  I did three co\loser and closer crops.  But even when cropped the results are still larger than 1000 pixels wide for the first two so the TO software reduces them to 1000 pixels.  But here they are.

Also note in #2 and #4 the old piers for the original alignment along the river before the dam was built.

Interesting to know the name of the old resort, curious of it's exact location. I did notice some foundations on the hillside under the freeway, I think they've since been covered by the freeway changes.

A little to the right side of the photos someone has built a house in the past 10 years or so. You can catch a glimpse of it from the freeway.

Pity any hobos (yuppie or otherwise) who might have been riding that train.
