It's just RR west of Colfax where the 1 and 2 tracks split.  The train, the Zephyr (#5) is on the #1 track.  The #2 will enter Tunnel 32 just to the right of the photographer.
Pretty sure.

Hmmm, not so sure. The topography doesn't match the split you describe - there shouldn't be a hill between the tracks.

I want to guess lower, Applegate to Bowman area.

Course' I could be waaaaay wrong, too!

I took this shot at Cape Horn of the Overland at MP140 back in 1960. I remember walking there from Colfax. I took it from ground level about where the lead Amtrak unit is. The scerey has changed a bit over the  years. The other track can be seen curving off to the right.

We're at the upper end of Cape Horn peninsula; where the WB #1 track curves to head into T#34 and T#33. Just a mile below Cape Horn station and road x-ing. This is Amtrak #5.
