Nostalgia & History > Switchers from extinct builders in California.SantDate: 12/03/16 22:09 Switchers from extinct builders in California.Sant Author: DNRY122 1) What may have been the last Baldwin VO-1000 on the SP roster-- and may have gone by my home in Monrovia in the late 1940s-early 1950s. Some time in the mid-1960s 1857 was on duty at LA Union Station in the pre-Amtrak era.
2) Santa Fe had a large fleet of Alco switchers-- S-2 2390 was spotted in Bakersfield around 1973 or 74. Moving these "Smokey Joes" to Kern County may have been encouraged by the LA Smog Control authorities. 3) SP kept most of their Fairbanks-Morse switchers in the Bay Area, where their F-M TrainMaster (H66-24) units powered most of the "Commute" trains between San Francisco and San Jose. Here's 2368 working long-abandoned industrial track near what is now the Caltrain terminal at 4th & Townsend. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 12/03/16 22:15 by DNRY122.
