Extra RI 4796 West
Author: WichitaJct

This photo was taken in February 1977. At that time the UP between Topeka and Kansas City was DT ABS. The RI 4796 was using the EB main at Lawrence (Ks.) entered the center siding to use it to crossover to the WB main.

Thanks for posting this. I remember those center sidings. Like the Rock Island, they are now gone.

I always liked the "don't tread on me stickers" that were applied to the cab doors on the blue reapaints.

Very cool! I lived in Lawrence for a few years and hope to move back.

I've enjoyed both of your images (this one and RI 4795 east a couple of days ago) very much. Always great to see the SD's on the point of Rock freight. One thing I remember about these units during their ICG 6040-6049 days were their horns. A very enjoyable 5 chime sound. There were regular ICG horns, and there were these 10 units that sounded exceptional! Thanks for a nice look back.

The blue ones you see here aren't repaints - that's the factory paint from EMD.

They had their RI-issued Nathan P5s at first when ICG got them, and as time went on had them swapped for Leslie S5-Ts.
