I have credited this shot to Bruce Black as I have several others that he took of the 511 in this scheme at St. Paul (is this one @ St. Paul too?). Looks almost like a dead heat w/SOO F, but I don't think either were moving. No date either ...

Thanks for posting this. The Great Northern paint scheme looks "just right" on this E7A.

Almost certainly around the roundhouse at St. Paul Union Depot.  That would be the Kellogg Blvd. bridge in the background.  St. Paul was the only location where both railroads used the same passenger station as they had separate stations in both Minneapolis and Duluth/Superior.  SOO trains to and from Chicago and Portal/Winnipeg originated/terminated in St. Paul and while I was unaware that the SOO used the mechanical facility at SPUD, they had to service their power somewhere.  I'd be happy for someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You're not wrong, Gordon, that's definitely the SPUD
roundhouse where GN passenger power was stored and
serviced between runs. Soo power was also stored here
although I can't say if this was "Winnepeger" power,
most likely, or "Laker" power.

I'd be curious of the date of this shot. I'm thinking pre-1965,
because all the E7's got the simplified Orange and Pullman
green scheme by that time, IIRC.

I agree with Nick .... pre-'65 and post 1961 (when SOO went to the red/light gray
paint scheme).  Also, definitely SPUD roundhouse area.

The original GN scheme looks much better than the later "simplified" scheme.
