Compared to the 1962 schedule it looks like only one set of equipment is now needed.

The Indianapolis service is gone.

The schedule reflected in the your post of the April 24 1966 TT actually began with Monon's TT of October 25 1964.  The purpose as you surmised was to operate the schedule with only one equipment set.  I know a couple of guys from Louisville who rode a round trip:  They left Louisville at 6:30 AM on a Saturday and arrived back at 2:10 AM on the next day, Sunday.

That disappeared on April 9, 1959.  My grandmother's house butts up against the track in Broad Ripple, IN.  The line had upper quadrant semaphores and two freight trains a day until it was abandoned.  It's now a hiking and biking trail.

That seems to be an all-too-common story in American railroading.  First the passenger trains disappear.  Then the freights.  Then the track.
