New York Shortlilne (CNJ/Reading) Question
Author: BarstowRiff

What was the crew arrangment for Philly to Jersey City freights before Conrail? Did Reading crews run through, or was there some type of pooling agreement? Ditto for Baltimore and Ohio freight and Royal Blue passenger service. Thanks for any information.

Just a guess, but that route might have been a joint operation with crews (and locomotives) apportioned between the two RR's on a mileage basis. That's how Canadian Pacific and Boston & Maine handled their Newport-White River Junction line in Vermont, where the split was roughly 60/40 (CPR/B&M).

This accident report http://dotlibrary.specialcollection.net/Document?db=DOT-RAILROAD&query=(select+3950) says the line was jointly operated and describes a wreck that involved a CNJ crew and train and an RDG crew and train.

An excerpt: "The accident occurred on that part of the RDG extending westward from Bound Brook Jct, N.J. to Jenkintown, Pa., a distance of 47.6 miles. In the accident area, this is a three-track line over which RDG and CNJ trains are jointly operated."

Also "This westbound CNJ freight train was manned by CNJ employees." The other train is described as being a Reading train with RDG crew.

I would think that B&O trains would also have used RDG and CNJ crews (the train in the wreck above had B&O power and might have been a B&O run-through).
