Nostalgia & History > I Had Never Seen the Front of That DepotDate: 01/22/17 18:57 I Had Never Seen the Front of That Depot Author: MartyBernard When I scanned this depot slide of Rick Burn's today, I realized I had never seen the front of the Seaboard Air Line Depot in Petersburg, VA. Thus I thought some or many of you hadn't either. I could not find the depot on Google Earth. The N&W depot was easy to find. And so was the Amtrak Depot (ex-ACL).
The seconsd shot Rick took trackside of E7A 3044 with Train 34, the Silver Comet. She became SCL 569. Both slides are dated August 1966. Enjoy, Marty Bernard Edited 1 time(s). The building was there until just recently, but it appears to have been demolished. Oddly enough, the platform canopy is still there. You can see the canopy in this aerial view: https://goo.gl/maps/HdZ6sQvDdPr The old SAL station building was where the three trailers are parked in the aerial photo. And in this street view, you can see the canopy in the background: https://goo.gl/maps/Cz3gGcE4BQ32

Not used to seeing that in the Midwest.

Maybe the station was still there early in the year, but was only recently demolished. Sad to see it go. A beautiful old station. Always was surprised that the owner kept it for so long, and surprised to see that the canopies still remain.
