This made my day...

I believe this is at either "Old Hinda" or El Casco...

Why such small power as a helper?

An interesting point.  Barny Root was an SP & ATSF watch inspector in San Berdoo.  He was a parapalegic from an accident in 1939 on his way to work for the UP in Las Vegas.  He had a white Cady that he drove chasing trains all over. I was lucky to go with his numerous times.

Made my day too. I think the film begins just east of Redlands; at 1:31 can be seen the El Casco water tank and at 2:00 until the end is
at the Beaumont signal bridge.
To think this was only 7 years before I went to work there. Kinda like video of events of something taken in 2010. Just like yesterday.
Thanks very much for this!

Charlie

Really great film, especially for tiny 8 mm. Interesting to note that the dynamo was in operation throughout. With no headlight on and in daytime, wonder where they were using the generated electricity.

Those SP 2-8-0's were real work horses, doing every thing from road work, to yard goats and as helpers....SP used the 2-8-0's in all sorts of jobs....In this movie clip, if you listen closely, you can hear this little guy work....SP made the error of shutting down too many 2-8-0's and had to go to Cotton Belt for 10 more, rather then shop enough 2-8-0's to operate until all steam was shut down....as it was, ther were plenty of 2-8-0's still ready for service and the bulk of the Cotton Belt 2-8-0's ended their service at Bay shore yard.  Thanks 2778 for entering the movie clip of one of SP's finest locomotives....

Nice video, I can imagine how loud that engine was pushing hard behind that freight!
