We are always seeing references to the Burlington's raceway, but never to C&NW. Were scheduling and operations on the C&NW communter lines similar to those on the Burlington?

There is a several mile stretch of the C&NW where there is only a double track mainline between River Forest and Elmhurst and from West Chicago to Geneva. The CB&Q was 3 to 4 main tracks most of the way to Aurora. In addition, the CB&Q route had many more interlockings to keep operations fast and fluid. I believe the last section of double track between RF and 25th Avenue in Melrose Park is scheduled for construction of a third track this year. Triple-tracking has been completed from 25th Avenue to Elmhurst. Date: 01/26/17 10:24 Re: More of Rick Burn's CNW Photos Author: kevink Plowhandle Wrote:

While that is true today, it was not during the time of CNW which was the time in question. And I did mention that the last piece of third main to be constructed is between River Forest to 25th Avenue. |
