Come on, guess........................... Mel went back to SLO, restricted to freight only. I have one of the ash trays. Weighs a ton with the sunset cast into the base. It could have been a drink holder but mine just has the ridges cast, outside of the ash tray, where they would sit. However, in a derailment the chairs, ashtrays, ect, became lethal objects to both crew and passengers. According to Southern Pacific Passenger Cars Volume 5: Lounge, Dome & Parlor Cars, this car is a Class 83-L-1 built by Pullman-Standard 11/26/1949 - Lot 6806, Pullman Plan 7580, SP Order No. 255. Assigned to the City of San Francisco, it was originally painted SP Armour Yellow and Harbor Mist Gray. It was repainted to Simulated Stainless Steel with Scarlet Letterboard around 1962. Retired in 05/1971,. it was assigned into company service as SP 206, 1971, then SP 216, 1975, then SP 289 City of Angels, ca. 1985, then went to the UPRR on 09/11/1996.
