Fogg visits Raton: Warbonnets in 1966
Author: valmont

Pic 1 is a Howard Fogg shot he took on Nov. 14, 1966 on Raton Pass ... anyone ID the train?
Pic 2 is my shot on Mar. 3, 1990, when freight still made the climb ....

Just curious .... anyone have a count of non-passenger trains have run over Raton Pass since the line became almost 'Amtrak only'?

Nice shots!  Old Santa Fe Railway train crews, based out of Albuquerque and worked between Albuquerque and La Junta.  Raton, NM based engine crews worked to and from La Junta.

I wish BNSF would keep a few trains or crews running that line--say, TOFC or low priority manifests.  Something.  Anything!

Last fairly regular trains were mostly eastbound baretable, coal and grain empties and for quite awhile a wednesday eastbound ABQ to WSP Z train and eastbound BARDEN. MOST crews vanned, bussed or Amtrak back to ABQ. Hardly any westbound traffic for decades other than occasional service interuption detours and the last regular westbound DENBAR. The big killer was two tracking most of the Clovis Sub. My last photos on the sub of non Amtrak trains were 2004.

I do not have a count, but the number is not large.  Here are some views from 2006, 2007 and 2008.

1.  BNSF 4311 leads a short Z-ABQWSP9-04N eastbound at the Summit of Glorieta Pass at Glorieta, NM on July 4, 2006.

2. NS 2699 leads grain empties at Apache Canyon, NM on Aril 22, 2007.

3.  BNSF 5427 leads grain empties at Rowe, NM on January 20, 2008
