Sleeper Saturday: C&EI Red Rock Pass (A Mystery Slide!)
Author: Rainier_Rails

From December 1929 to January 1930, Pullman constructed 31 Plan #3979A 8 section-1 drawing room-2 compartment (8S-1DR-2C) sleepers in Lot #6334, with 30 of these assigned to specific roads or trains; 12 were built for the B&O with Gap-series names, 2 were built for the Blackhawk with biographical names, 4 were built for the Aristocrat with biographical names, and 12 were built for the C&NW with Pass-series names, including the Red Rock Pass.  At the 12/31/1948 Pullman divestiture, 23 of these 31 cars were sold to 6 different roads and were leased back to Pullman for operation: 15 to the NYC, 2 each to the ACL, IC, and C&NW, and 1 each to the NC&StL and C&EI (the Red Rock Pass).  The Red Rock Pass was withheld from Pullman lease in August 1962, and I don't have any further disposition info for this car.  Now comes the mystery:

Like many of my recent posts, this is a duplicate slide with absolutely no info written on the mount.  Taken by an unknown photographer at an unknown location on an unknown date*.  But, looking at the trees and the architectural design of the depot, there is no doubt in my mind that this is somewhere in Florida.  The question is, where?

*Even though the date is unknown, this slide was taken sometime between February 1955 (when the car received the paint scheme seen here) and August 1962, when it was retired.

The C&EI was a participant in a Chicago - Florida service with L&N and ACL.  This train operated every other day opposite the South Wind, a Chicago - Florida train operated by PRR, L&N, and ACL.
If you do some research into the Florida service that C&EI participated in, this might help identify the location.

Orlando, FL.  A similar picture with the same car is "The Cars of Pullman" on p83.   Oddly, the water tower doesn't appear in that image (unless it was airbrushed out).

Yes, and the "new" station in Orlando, after 1926 when ACL moved out of what's now called Church St Station in the middle of downtown.
