O&W's Green Machines
Author: TheNavigator

With St. Patrick’s Day just a few days away, I thought I’d add these pics of Shamrock Coal’s Oneida & Western-lettered SD40-2s to the shots that have been posted in the past.  Location is Corbin, KY, September 1981, as O&W 9956, 9955, 9954, and 9952 await their next assignment.  These units, along with four sisters and their dedicated unit trains, shuttled between eastern Kentucky coalfields and power plants in South Carolina from 1979 until the mid-1980s.  (I believe all eight units ended up on the BCR.)

Thanks for looking,
GK

These look like the units I remember seeing in the big yard at Ravenna, KY ( Estill County ) , but I don't remember the year.  Ravenna was set up to send trains west, or south .  I only saw them once .

Thanks for, posting these. I remember catching the O&W train on the Georgia Railroad occasionally. Also, the last time I knowingly saw one of the O&W units, it was 747 in BCR colors working in the Pemberton pusher set. Who knows how many times I may have seen one in service as a lease unit, if any made it into that service.
