Beale AFB, California centercab

Is this unit still there? Lots less fuel to move around now with the demise of the late-great SR-71. This was taken back in 1988.

It was there about four or five years ago.  Haven't heard of it being moved.

Cool critter. Nice SAC shield and band on that car in the background- was it for some sort of training? Missile-related?

I sure do miss the Blackbird, or as we called it at Kadena, Habu.

Looks like it might be a power car. SAC had two types of rail-mobile train equipment I've heard about - flight simulators (which were probably history when this picture was taken), and mission evaluation (bomb targeting).

I remember a news article about Travis AFB and their railroad.  Seems like it had a centercab, too.  Never did see it in operation unfortunately.

At last report still active delivering aviation gas for U-2's.  The U-2 program has been repeatedly slated for termination and repeatedly extended. Latest date I heard was sometime in 2019. I believe this is the last active USAF rail operation in the lower 48 with the recent closure of the one at Shaw AFB, South Carolina.

Here's 1672 being shipped out of Forbes AFB in Pauline, KS, just south of Topeka. It was there for years, and left when they closed the base in the early 70's sometime. Always wondered where it went from there. When I took this photo, it was entrained in the Pauline Switcher, going back to Topeka.
