SP San Jose and Oakland 1975
Author: odub

I made a quick trip to visit a college friend in March of 1975 and we were able to do a brief bit of railfanning while I was there.
First stop was San Jose.  A couple of GP9Es were on a stub track out front of the San Jose roundhouse.

I'm guessing this was either a Saturday or a Sunday as the SDP45s were all lined up in a row.  SD7 1420 was poking out of the roundhouse.

A pair of SP SW8s idling in Oakland.
The view south along the SP/WP tracks toward the street running past Jack London Square.
Not sure where this shot was taken.  A couple of UP SD40s and an SP SW1500.

Hope you like them.

WOW! Those shots are incredible. It's amazing how close you could get in 1975 and on railroad property! Today if they even think you're looking at their property to take a photo even from across the street they want to throw you in jail for it. Sign of the times........

The last photo is in Emeryville (right at the border with Oakland), looking North (SP East) toward Shellmound Tower.

Don, thanks for sharing some shots of good memories for me, namely the Lenzen roundhouse.  Spent a fair amount of time there, back when you were pretty much "free to roam."  Love that painting.....WOW, one of the best I've seen.

Great memories. SD7 1419 and 1420 were reqular power for the Permanente.

Anyone know what the smal,l horn on the building on the 1420 photo is. Looks like an electrial line
leading to it.

Regards, Jim

May I ask what the E stood for in the GP9E nomenclature?

Rebuilt units completed by SP at Sacramento under GRIP ! from 1970 to 1976 were recapitalized by SP selling the units to Southern Pacific Equipment Co., which then leased the units backto the SP. These units were designated by an E suffix to their model designation, such as GP9E,SD9, and GP20E.
