The Barriger collection at flickr.com has a pic
(33188178916) of the SP depot at Goleta CA.
A bay-window caboose, what looks to be a
baggage cart, a Western Union sign and
a train-order signal. No autos, tho. How late
could it have been taken?

That is after it was moved over to a private display area,  Its not at the origional site. I know, we used to get on #90 there as kids and ride in to SBA. My grandfather used to take me down from the ranch to pickup LCL freight. There was a single wig-wag at Kellog Ave. and two at the Fairview road crossing. Switched it on the west peddler when it was still a TO office for only westbound trains. (one board)  The west end of the building was leased to the Walnut Growers Assn, Al Singelton, the agent lived upstairs and worked down in the office. After Al retired, the agent from Surf bid the job in until it was closed.

I donated all the call books from Santa Barb. to them after we went running thru SBA to LA.

So, as others have concluded, if the depot is a museum set to a particular time period, the photo could ahve been taken at any time.

be the main line in the foreground.

The photo from 1983 would be fairly soon after the depot was moved and restored.  There was the standard clause with the original adjoining landowners that the land the Goleta depot was on reverted to them if the Rairoad didn't continue to use the land or the depot.  The depot had been closed for years, and there hadn't been a car spotted on the team track for several years also, so the SP took out the main track switch to the team track, which made abandonment certain.
