EMD's 25,000 Locomotive Celebration
Author: MartyBernard

On October 6, 1962 EMD marked the production of their 25,000 locomotive. The event was at their McCook, IL plant. Roger Puta was there and took a few photos. Here are some. More to come.

1. EMD's 25,000 locomotive was L&N 1014 seen here. An AT&SF gas-electric car in the background.

2. EMD GP30 demonstrator 5639 attended.

3, 4, and 5. W&A #3 4-4-0, the General, and a L&N combine were on display.

Enjoy,
Marty Bernard

At one time EMD would host events for their various achievements throughout their history. I've attended quite a few and always enjoyed them! However they haven't had anything for almost 20 years now (last one was when the CSX SD70MAC's were new)..........

L&N 1014 became SBD 1347 ..... probably long scrapped.

Probably gone to scrap, but then I don't think it was the "25,000th locomotive" anyway.

Corporations don't do anything anymore that cost shareholders profits. Chances that they "put on a show" is as remote as the pubic arriving in the dressed up clothing they were wearing in these pictures. When was the last time you saw that many women in dresses?

These are the first photos and mention I have ever seen or heard about that event.
Many thanks for showing them here. I was at the 50th Anniversary open house in 1972,
but forgot to bring my camera which I regret to this day. The open house, in '78 I think it was, was really great too.

Is anything happening at that facility now?

The main "original plant buildings" have all been torn down as well as the steam/power plant. That property was sold off quite some years ago. The "newer" Engineering Building, the "export/parts building" and the Engine plant, are all still there and, is where engines, main generators, and electrical cabinets are still manufactured.

Curious which car that was. There's a paragraph on p.79 of McCall's The Doodlebugs that relates how Santa Fe sent M.115 to Chicago two years later in 1964 for EMD's 30-year celebration. EMD looked to car over, noted that it had been repowered with a Caterpillar diesel, and said "thanks but no thanks." The car in the background has Cat exhausts.

There was a news item on p.8 of the January 1963 TRAINS called "EMD Celebrates its 25,000th" illustrating the festivities around the completion and roll-out of L&N 1014. The article puts the date of the celebration as October 4, 1962.

Not only the women--when was the last time you saw that many guys in suits, other than a funeral?

Those women are wearing the same hairstyle my mom did for years. Speaking of my mom, she was probably ready for me to be born around the time of these photos as my due date was getting close.

Big deal on the L&N. Used in advertising and made the front cover of our employee magazine.
Ran that unit numerous times.
