OK SP Fans, Please Caption This For Me
Author: MartyBernard

All I have is the date Kodak printed on Roger Puta's slide mount -- February 1972. I'd like a short caption to go with the archive version.

The wheel rims came out yellow. Since the lettering is white, could the wheel rims have been somehow that dirty? If the lettering were also yellow, I would have taken the yellow out. And the rods are brown. Were they? And there is a lot of blue in the black. Does that seem realistic? Without that blue the photo becomes pretty dull.

If somebody wants to play with the colors, be my guest.

Thanks,
Marty Bernard

There are lots of old threads about SP 5021 on here, including this one last month:

The picture shows the engine while it was stored on the Santa Fe at San Bernardino, CA. That's the powerhouse smokestack and the Mt. Vernon Ave. overpass in the background. The engine was owned by the Southern California Chapter R&LHS, and was moved to the fairgrounds in Pomona, CA in 1976 where it is today part of the RailGiants Train Museum.

Regarding the color, here are some similar photos of 5021 during its stay at San Bernardino under different lighting situations for additional points of reference:

Here in addition are some photos Ed Von Nordeck took of the engine posed in front of the San Bernardino depot in April 1962. The wheel tires aren't "yellow" exactly, but you can see some rust spots and streaks that are besmirching the white paint. Combined with the dimmer light in the shadows compared to the brightly illuminated lettering, they do end up looking less-than-pure-white.

There was an excursion out of LA over Cajon Pass this day utilizing Santa Fe's set of EMD-repowered PA's, which was probably the occasion for having the engine on display rather than in storage by the shops. Other views of the excursion are here:
