Republic Steel's 'Hidden Critters'
Author: valmont

You just had to really go looking to find these. I suspect they are long gone, as is Republic Steel*. Information is from slide mounts. Have a favorite? :-)

1. RSC #361 GE23T (with as small penthouse addition!) @ Cleveland, OH 12/71 Photographer?

2. RSC no# Goodman electric Massillon, OH 3/9/74 by John Beach

3. RSC #531 Goodman 10T battery electric @ Massillon, OH 6/6/75 by John Beach. A little different than UP's veranda turbines

* From Wikipedia: Republic Steel was once the third largest steel producer in the United States. It was founded as the Republic Iron and Steel Company in Youngstown, Ohio in 1899. Wikipedia
Headquarters: Youngstown, OH
Ceased operations: 1984
Founded: 1899, Youngstown, OH
Successor: LTV Steel (later ISG and ArcelorMittal)

Number one is like a double decker bus! There must be an interesting story about the how and why of this unit...

Might have been used on the coke ovens, operator could see over the cars while loading. Doug

I live in Maine, and somewhere along Route 1, I think around Wiscasset, someone built a two story outhouse... (for laughs of course), this unit reminds me of that too.

No. 361 looks like a GE 25-tonner. And we thought a C415 had high visibility.

Looks like they didn't want to maintain that pesky roller chain driving the unpowered axle so opted for siderods instead. GOOD decision!

The way the staircase sticks off the back of the 361 in the first photo, I would think it would interfere with whatever car they were coupling to.

Neat group of industrial locos. Thank you for sharing.
