1) Typical Rock Island lashup awaiting departure

2) EMC NW1 built in 1938

3) Diesel rail cars used as switchers. Scrapped in 1964.

Cool stuff. Always liked the doodlebug "locomotives." I think that NW1 has an Alco 244 engine.

The RI used these motors a lot on small branchline PSGR
trains. In the early '50's I can barely remember riding behind these
on No. 19 which was the Cedar Rapids, Ia. to Estherville train.
We rode the train from Vinton to Iowa Falls where we caught
a "Rocket" to Des Moines. As my Dad was an employee, we rode on a pass.
As I recall, we left Vinton in the wee hours and got into Iowa Falls
about day break.
