Nostalgia & History > Old Car, Gearhead questionDate: 05/15/17 05:18 Old Car, Gearhead question Author: donstrack I've been scanning 300 photos of Ogden Union Stockyards from a private collection. Among them is a series of very nice 8x10 prints of the newest part of the stockyards, built to load livestock into UP stock cars. But there is no date, other than I know the expansion was in the 1952-1954 time period.
Maybe someone can tell me what car type of car this is. It might help to better pin down the date of the photos. It likely predates the October 1954 aerial view in the third photo, because the expansion is empty of livestock. As general information, Ogden Union Stockyards opened in 1917, and were first expanded in the 1930s. Then in the 1952-1954 time period, the final expansion took place. The stockyards closed in 1972, at the same time as the corporate owner, Denver Union Stockyards, closed. http://utahrails.net/industries/livestock-ogden.php Don Strack Date: 05/15/17 05:36 Re: Old Car, Gearhead question Author: bandob That's an Oldsmobile, I believe. Not sure of year, maybe late 1940's or early 1950's?
Looks like sometime between 1948 and 1950 by this website: http://www.oldcarandtruckpictures.com/Oldsmobile/1948_Oldsmobile-oct3.jpg B&OBill Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/15/17 05:39 by bandob. Date: 05/15/17 05:40 Re: Old Car, Gearhead question Author: Grand87 maybe a Stutabaker

The '49 is very similar, but the key is the trim at the front part of the rear quarter panel, it was noticeably larger on the '49. My Grandfather had one. I liked the car, but HE scared the bajezus out of me! SR Date: 05/15/17 08:17 Re: Old Car, Gearhead question Author: tomstp Yep 1950 Oldsmobile. Thanks for the shot from the air. That was a busy place.

the early 60's when ti rusted out. Hated that car. Nick Tharalson, Marion, IA Date: 05/15/17 09:12 Re: Old Car, Gearhead question Author: MojaveBill My Grandmother had a '49 Olds 98, which I got to drive a bit. Kind of a tank compared to today's cars.
That looks like an 88, the smaller version.... Bill Deaver Tehachapi, CA Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/15/17 09:14 by MojaveBill. Date: 05/15/17 19:54 Re: Old Car, Gearhead question Author: SR2 Yes, definitely a 1949 Rocket "88". Those were fast cars with the newly developed
overhead valve V-8. It was 303 cubic inches and 135 horsepower. The only thing faster in 1949 was the Cadillac 331 cubic inch OHV V-8. A 1949 Olds Rocket "88" was the Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500 that year. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/16/17 23:54 by SR2.
