RG 5327 on the UP
Author: callum_out

September 1986 shot of Rio Grande SD-45 5327 on the point of a UP manifest South of some
city in Nevada with big buildings. After seeing so many RG units in coal consists, seeing one
on the point of a UP manifest was a bit different.

Big buildings? Definitely looks like Reno!

Love that Leslie S5 horn.

I caught 3 DRGW SD45s on the ATSF 858-Z1 one day in Fullerton in Sept, 1980 and made a beautiful audio recording of the lead unit #5327 blowing that horn at the Raymond Crossing! Good times.

Was the Kaiser coal train still running then? If so, the UP may have been using that RG SD45 in between coal runs as I hear was their practice. That RG SD45 road number was from the Kaiser pool set (5326,27,28,36,37,38).

Cheers, Jim Fitch
