Timetables and pictures I've seen from the late 1950s show the Olympian as a relatively small train, at least compared to it's competition. For example, the May 1959 guide lists two reserved seat coaches, the Super Dome lounge, diner, 14 section tourist sleeper, 10-6 sleeper and the 8BR Skytop lounge. A picture from 1958 at Deer Lodge shows an all-yellow consist headed up by bi-polar E4, with a streamlined RPO and baggage dorm ahead of the two coaches. The Olympian Hi was dropped in 1961. During its last couple of years of operation the electrics were replaced by diesels - usually an E9/F7B/FP7 combo - running through the electric territories. Try doing a search on the TO Nostalgia board - I'm pretty sure pictures have been posted here over the years.

This book's descriptions of the Columbian and Olympian Hiawatha consists are very limited. The end of the book has a few pages of sample consists listing all locomotives and all passenger cars for a number of Milwaukee Road trains. However, the Columbian and Olympian are among them.

More detailed information on the Olympian Hiawatha can be found in Jim Scribbins' book, "The Hiawatha Story," currently published by the University of Minnesota Press:

Taken from page 61 of Wayner's book. This is the only example of a West Coast
bound Milwaukee Road train that I could find in the book.

I rode the OH from Tacoma to Chicago and then the CSS&SB to South Bend in 1957. Can't remember much about the consist but did get a kick out of seeing the electrics, including the Little Joes on the South Shore.

In '58 rode the City of Portland. In going thru Kemmerer, WY, a high school friend sitting next to me and heading to the same school, pointed out the back of a store and told me that that was his grandfathers first store (debatable). My classmate did not have the same last name as his grandfather. Does anybody know who gramps was?

Understand that the consists you're referring to are at just about the end of Milwaukee long-distance passenger service. Milwaukee saw the handwriting on the wall regarding passenger service much earlier than its competitors. There was a saying going around the Milwaukee in the mid '50s, "All freight by '58." It took them a few more years, but they managed to eliminate passenger traffic and leave it to the neighboring roads to carry until Amtrak.
