Nostalgia & History > Take The Grand Tour of Kentucky Railway Museum 1972Date: 05/27/17 00:18 Take The Grand Tour of Kentucky Railway Museum 1972 Author: krm152 This is a continuation of my first railroad photos I started taking, about a year earlier during 1971, with my Instamatic X35 on Kodacolor X film.
Because of my upcoming move to Winston Salem, I decided to take my camera to the Kentucky Railway Museum (KRM) to take some photos on Sunday, May 21, 1972. At this time, the Museum was located in a part of Eva Bandman Park on River Road just east of Beargrass Creek in eastern Louisville KY. The Museum was laid out in an east west orientation paralleling River Road. Photos taken were: Photo1- Visitor Entrance looking northwest Photo2- Benefactor Recognition Board Photo3- KRM Logo on Barn for Horse Car Exhibit Photo4- Horse Car Exhibit and Fare Box for donations to museum Photo5- Hand Car Exhibit Photo6- Quadricycle Exhibit Photo7- MON #32 EMD BL2 & USAX #89636 Kitchen Car Photo8- USAX #89636 Kitchen Car Photo9- Frankfort & Cincinnati #M-551 “Cardinal” Motorcar Photo10- KRM Office sign on wood body L&N Caboose Photo11- Monon Caboose and former “Tool” and “Exhibit” L&N Baggage Cars (Monon Caboose, an original exhibit, was subsequently sold.) Photo12- Republic Steel #285 (ex L&N #2152) 0-8-0 Switcher Photo13- Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) #2716 Kanawha 2-8-4 Photo14- General view KRM grounds looking east from #770 at the west end Photo15- ex L&N Baggage Car - "New" KRM Exhibit & Souvenir Sales Car Photo16- Southern (SOU) #811 "Sweetwater" Coach (This car subsequently went to Sweetwater GA; the Southern compensated KRM for this.) Photo17- L&N #770 E6A - 1st L&N Passenger Diesel Photo18- Right Front view L&N #770 E6A As a footnote, the 1964 Ohio River flood crested near the bottom of the side cab window of 2716. It almost wiped out the Museum. The river has not had a flood crest at near that height since then. The Museum moved from this site in 1978, just six years after these photos were taken, to a location in Louisville’s eastside near MP 9 on L&N’s LCL Line. In 1990, the museum moved again this time being to its now present location in New Haven KY on the old L&N Lebanon Branch. ALLEN Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/06/22 15:17 by krm152. Had the foundation for the new turntable partially poured. At its new location at New Haven KY. Funny note. My DeLorme Gazette did not show a rail line anywhere near New Haven. I had to draw my own:) They have a tourist train with a CF7 and L&N GP9. The star steam engine in the shop getting overhauled:) Date: 05/27/17 04:05 Re: Take The Grand Tour of Kentucky Railway Museum 1972 Author: rev66vette SD45X Wrote:

Thanks for sharing. Date: 05/27/17 07:35 Re: Take The Grand Tour of Kentucky Railway Museum 1972 Author: refarkas Fascinating. I was there in 1972, but it was not open at the time. Now I have some knowledge of what I missed.

Sulzer, the Cardinal was operated by the F&C from 1927 through the end of 1952. Have a good Memorial Day weekend. MARK |
