Nice way to remember the current heat wave will someday end. The water spout is gone. Sure was impressive how quickly it could fill a tender of water car.

Can't be 1979, as she was painted back to Southern Pacific colors for the run to Sacramento, to attend the grand opening of the CSRM, and Rail Fair '81, in late April 1981.

Not sure yet. The family rode from Redding to Black Butte. 4449 single with helpers added in Dunsmuir.

I was originally thinking this was the Cantara Loop apology tour but that was summer. Late 80's, early 90's Anschutz
Era.

I did say 79ish because my memory is fuzzy being almost 40 years ago. Could have been 80 or 81 as I was still in the area until I transfered to Humboldt State University in Arcata CA until fall of 81.

As HotWater stated above, 4449 was still in AFT colors in 1979. Didn't return to Daylight colors until 1981.

If you look closely, you can see the Diesel helper, a 7100 class (7141?), with a gumball flasher. This would suggest the early 1990s. Perhaps its the return leg of the 10th anniversary of the opening of the California Museum at Sacramento, in 1991. I recall snow in the area during that trip.

Thanks Brad, I think you are right judging by the age of my family on the train.

Funny how these things escape us when we don't document the particulars.

BTW, train was all Daylight consist. Sphogger

I'm positive that photo is NOT from 1981, as there was no snow there, back then. I believe it is that 1991 time frame, per the link provided. In fact, were we scheduled to have a photo runby for the passengers on the train, but there was so much heavy wet snow on the ground, we passed on the runby.

It can't be 7141, the order only went to 7138. It must be 7111.
