Indeed, a couple of classics from back when the Milby Street Diesel Shop was THE place to go for road name/motive power variety and run by a night foreman who welcomed camera-carrying fans. If things were slow they'd even spot equipment for you. On many nights the smell of idling diesels was overpowered by the thick aroma of roasting coffee beans from the Maxwell House coffee plant across the street.

Too bad big six axle power isn't allowed in Milby anymore.

Why can't six axle power go there any longer?

Derailments. No six axles allowed, all other movements restricted to walking speed. The engine facility at South Yard was moved back to Milby when Wabec was kicked out and went back to North yard. Mostly used to try and keep the genset fleet running, there are some SD70MACs stored there, which I find funny as they are six axle engines obviously.

I remember the Mechanical Superintendent, J. W. McCaddon. He was a good steam man as well. I believe his son worked for the Union Pacific at one time.
