SD45 Took a Slide 1972
Author: krm152

This is a continuation of my first photos I started taking during 1971 with my Instamatic X35 on Kodacolor X film.
The N&W experienced a washout on their Winston Salem - Roanoke Line north of Madison NC from heavy rains associated with Hurricane Agnes sometime during the week beginning June 18, 1972.
During the afternoon of June 25, our first Sunday in our home in Winston Salem, my new friend, Bill Russell, called to ask if I would like to accompany him up on the N&W to see the washout damage. Fortunately, I was able to get away.
Two wrecker trains were used to work the washout site. The N&W Roanoke Wrecker train worked the north end of the site. The Southern Spencer Wrecker train was borrowed to work the south end of the site. Each wrecker train was powered by two N&W GP9s.
When we arrived at the washout site, we found the wreck crews wrapping up their work. The wrecker crews had just finished re-railing the last damaged equipment, a battered and muddy N&W #1727 EMD SD45.
Photos taken were:
Photo1- Washout Site looking north
Photo2- N&W #1727 EMD SD45 battered and muddy
Photo3- SOU #903002 Spencer Wrecker
Photo4- Washout Site looking south
Never learned the details as to other equipment damaged.
