2002: An August trip to Canyon Rails, 2002
Author: bandob

Canyon Rails 2002, the NRHS 62nd Annual Convention was held at Williams, AZ. The Convention train from Los Angeles was pulled by AT&SF #3751. I was fortunate to ride Dover Harbor to the Convention, via Chicago and Emeryville. During the Chicago stay, we were able to again visit the Skybox for Railfans.

Dover Harbor, and MKT 403, were placed between the superliners liners and trailing MHC cars from Chicago to Denver. Since switching of MHC"s was being done in Denver, the conductor asked if we wanted to stay in that position or be placed on the rear. The only problem: the MHC's at the time did not have HEP pass-through and we'd have to run the generators. Did we want to chance that they would hold out against the desert heat in Utah and Nevada? Did we want comfort or scenery?

Well, these photos from the rear give you our answer.

There is no better way to see the Rockies than from the rear of a private car.

It did get hot, and we were happy for the cool temperatures of the Bay Area. We would re-board at Jack London Square after a night in a hotel.

An air hose failure led to an unscheduled stop on Cajon Pass. BNSF rolled up behind us.

Repair was prompt and we were on our way again.

Santa Fe and Grand Canyon Steam at Williams.

One trip to the Grand Canyon had the special train powered by a matched set of Grand Canyon FA's. Of course we had a desert run-by.

A night photo shoot was a featured activity. I had to leave, though, before riding the 3751 trip to the Canyon.

These are a very small fraction of photos, but limitations in time for scanning prevent more at this time.

That was one amzing adventure. One of the best I ever participated in. The sounds in the Pony were amazing.

Great memories there. I came from Oregon to Cali to pick up my 10 year old grandson for the Grand Canyon Special. We had a great time there and rode the doubleheader to the South Rim, which became a triple header on the return. In my old age I have forgotten the name of chairman of that convention, but he did a fine job for us railfans.
