I took this shot on Feb.25 1973 at Cheyenne from the C&S 'photography platform', location for Kountless rolls of Kodachrome Konsumimg.

This was, of course, after Amtrak began operations, and you can see evidence in the cars, including and NP 4th back.

Why I didn't spend more time at that spot, I'll never know.

Back to the cave, head lowered.

IIRC in that era the UP pulled the Zephyr backwards between Denver and Cheyenne, which might explain the absence of head end cars next to the power.

I also like the Best Western sign behind the Hitching Post billboard - more evidence that, as some on this board like to say, it's all crap now.

I'm sure most passenger train fans in 1973 felt it was all crap then, too.

Well, maybe not......the early Amtrak years had a lot of parallels to the CN "red, white, and blue" fares days. There was the devastation of our national passenger rail system already accomplished, but there was reason to hope too.

I rode the SFZ from Chicago to Ogden, UT in 1974. Don't remember much about it (I was 6 years old) but I do remember riding backwards!

This weekend I heard that the venerable name "Hitchin Post" is now finished as the current owners have closed.
