Nostalgia & History > Displaced By Changing TimesDate: 09/23/17 07:16 Displaced By Changing Times Author: MaryMcPherson One of the attractions of diesels for railroad management was the resulting savings in manpower. Diesels required a much smaller workforce to keep on the road. There is no denying the fiscal benefits to the railroad, but what about the men changing times left behind?
These clips appeared in the Southern Illinoisan newspaper on March 28 and March 30, 1958. Mary McPherson Dongola, IL Diverging Clear Productions Edited 1 time(s). I wonder if the business these three men'started ever got off the ground, and if it didn't, what happened to these men -- a d all the others who were laid off at the end of the steam era. And even if those men's business did prosper, I am pretty sure they would never have made as much money as they had when working for the railroad. Not everyone has the skills and abilities needed to successfully run a business. In fact, most people don't. That fact is that most of us are followers, and not leaders, and you have to be a good leader if you are going to be able to be successful at running a business. |
