Nostalgia & History > Early PC in the PacksaddleDate: 10/16/17 07:29 Early PC in the Packsaddle Author: PRRFan Some early post merger photos taken in the Packsaddle PRR MP289.
#1 & 2 Eastbound passenger taken late morning. #3 Westbound freight working its way toward Derry. PRRFan Date: 10/16/17 10:06 Re: Early PC in the Packsaddle Author: joemvcnj A sleeping car and 2 beaten up coaches, one being a P70. What train would that have been ?
I suppose a snack wagon for food. Date: 10/16/17 11:35 Re: Early PC in the Packsaddle Author: onblock joemvcnj Wrote:

That would be Chicago-New York train #54, which at that time was combined with St.Louis-New York train 32 in Pittsburgh. "Broadway" No just kidding. Which car are you saying is a sleeper? Uncle Joe Seffner,Fl. Date: 10/16/17 12:01 Re: Early PC in the Packsaddle Author: krm152 Like the PC photos.
Keep them coming. ALLEN Date: 10/16/17 13:38 Re: Early PC in the Packsaddle Author: raytc1944 The car behind the baggage cars is the sleeper.
Date: 10/16/17 15:27 Re: Early PC in the Packsaddle Author: joemvcnj Surprised they were running such a tiny train from Chicago to NY, and I assume the rear coach came form St Louis ?
Maybe that's how they swapped out the Valparaiso commuter cars. Date: 10/16/17 16:48 Re: Early PC in the Packsaddle Author: BarstowRiff I'm also surprised that there were any ex-New York Central sleepers left at that late date after that road's massive sell off to Mexico. Over 150 streamlined sleepers of various configurations.

Gary R Clark Griffith, Indiana Date: 10/17/17 07:36 Re: Early PC in the Packsaddle Author: aehouse I suspect the sleeper was a former PRR "rapids" series 10/6 car. By the time of the merger, the former NYC equivalent Pullman-Standard "river" series cars were gone. Some of NYC's Budd 10/6 cars (the "valley" series) made it into the PC merger, but they of course were stainless steel. The "rapids" car in the photo was one of very few of that class to be painted in Penn Central colors. Most remained in PRR colors with a PC patch job.
The rear coach on the train was one of the former N&W Budd 10/6 "county and college" series sleepers purchased by PRR in 1963-64 and converted to coaches. Some of these cars later served in various commuter services, and a few have been preserved on heritage/ tourist lines. Art House Gettysburg, Pa. Edited 3 time(s). The Pennsylvannia Ltd., 1 ea B-60, 10-6, P-85, with the P-70 FBD snack bar coach added at Pittsburgh. In typically PC perverse the 10-6 went Chi to NY eastbound , but only NY to Pittsburgh on westbound#55. Great photos, thanks for posting! |
