Nostalgia & History > LV #219 Alco grill questionDate: 11/10/17 06:29 LV #219 Alco grill question Author: nydepot It appears the grill over the louvers was a 3x3 opening for a total of nine square openings. Except the top two right ones are further divided into smaller openings for no apparent reason. What's the point of the extra "mullions"? It's still the same vertical louvers behind it. Thanks.

Not sure how the louver guard was set up in relation to the cylinder assy. Anyone who ever was walking next to those shutters when they closed shut suddenly won't forget the sound or the feeling of being startled by that quick SNAP! .

I think they had a small apparatus where that oblong hole is. But what I REALLY want to know is, what are Santa Fe coal hoppers doing in (looks like) Sayre, PA??? That unit was built for the Tennessee Central. Not sure it it relates to the original owner's requirements.
