GN Heater Cars
Author: krm152

GN converted a number of their F3B units into Heater Cars (Steam Generator Cars).
As far as I know, I unfortunately do not have a photo of one.
According to my records, five of these Heater Cars survive.
The table below shows the GN B Unit Number, the Present Number and the information as to where the car is believed to be presently located.
GN #306B BN #HC-16 at Minnesota Transportation Museum in St Paul MN
GN #354B AMTK #660 at Roots of Motive Power in Willits CA
GN #430C AMTK #662 at Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola CA
GN #432B AMTK #663 at Indiana Transportation Museum in Noblesville IN
GN #438B BN #HC-19 at Lake Whatcom Railway in Wickersham WA
Any confirmation information will be greatly appreciated.

Try these guys:

http://www.greatnorthernempire.net/

On the upper left menu highlight 'Surviving Equipment', then 'preserved', then Passenger Cars, then 'Heater cars'.

Or click on the selection on the changing web page.

Looks about the same list.

My buddy and I saw the GN heater car at Lake Whatcom Railway three days ago...it's still there.

Remind me why the extra height was needed when steam generators fit in the normal height of Es and Fs.

My understanding is that they built a water tank that covered the entire floor of the car necessitating the need for extra height.
