Joe i didn't see this in your Santa Fe calenders
Author: dan

look what pinterist showed me tonight... alt title 1 less cf7

Joe captioned; Early on the morning of November 29, 1968, two freight trains collided head on just south of Hale Center, Texas, on the Plainview District. As a result, the 213L broke completely in half just behind the cab (as designed). The Slaton derrick is shoving the nose portion of the unit (on its own truck) to a position where it can be loaded on a flat car for the trip to Cleburne Shops south of Fort Worth/Dallas (see photo #399952). The 213L and the 270C (lead unit on the other train) were both scrapped. Although the trains hit at a combined speed of 40 m.p.h. on a curve, no cars were derailed. There were two minor injuries.

That's pretty incredible. I think that's an F3.5, maybe less geez!

I think that was a design feature to break that way

Maybe not in the calendars, but other photos Joe took of the salvage operations that day adorn pages 168-169 of Warbonnets and Bluebonnets.

Don't know the details, but it looks like the crew might have walked out of that one. Good collision design.

It was setting the cab up on its own truck instead of loading it onto a flat that I was referencing.

A good Kit Bash for the modeler.

That's right E's and F's were designed to "crumple" like that. Was it a feature from the beginning say for example the FT's? I wish I could get the number of that flat car with the hook. We have one similar out west on the BNSF with a build date of 1924 it's with a little giant crane.

I worked with a guy who managed to tear his train apart between the first and second units (dim memory says drawbar, which is remarkable, but it was decades ago, maybe it was just a knuckle). This, however, takes the prize.

Photo on page 168 of Warbonnets and Bluebonnets shows that portion of 213L being loaded on a UP flatcar by a pair of derricks.
