WAG Wednesday: C&S Steam in Denver
Author: santafe199

By the summer of 1957 it was getting late in the game for Class 1 Steam just about everywhere. Bill Gibson was in Colorado in August of that year and caught a sampling of C&S power still snorting & belching that beloved super heated water vapor, including the #647 seen below. I did some on-line digging and found a C&S Steam roster that has its consolidations only topping out at #643. But I did find a reference and photo of C&S 646 on the Don Ross Group website. (Here’s a link: http://donsdepot.donrossgroup.net/dr285.htm ). According to those notes the 646 was scrapped in 1959….

1. C&S 2-8-0(?) 647 sits in Denver, CO on August 24, 1957.

Thanks for looking back!

Great Colorado & Southern Railway image at the old Rice Yard roundhouse (home of the mud ducks!). Location now occupied by Elitch Gardens amusement park-totally gone! Denver urban renewal continues changing the Mile High City scene.

C&S Rice Yards was flooded by South Platte River in the spring 1965 flood and C&S yard/enginehouse workers earned the nickname "mud ducks". June 16, 1965-darkest night in Denver’s history, a night of destruction far exceeding anything the city had ever known. The ’65 flood claimed 21 lives and resulted in property losses statewide estimated at $543 million — adjusted for inflation, that’s more than $4 billion in 2015 money — with the worst damage in the Denver metro area.
