Paducah, KY was the Illinois Central Gulf's locomotive shop town. The yard adjacent was full of Geeps waiting for their GP10 conversion project. Also several retired units were to be found, as well.
#1. Four ex-GM&O f-units. Were any of these rebuilt into F10's for the MBTA?
#2. ICG had a few of these rare beasts, Alco's C636. This one may still have been in service, but I doubt it was well liked. The crews and shops guys were probably all saying "What were they thinking?" when these showed up. Intended for coal train service, they didn't last long.
#3. Several of the former passenger fleet E-8's were there. Sad to see these rusting away.
All photos from April 7, 1977.

All four ex GM&O F3’s in Photo 1 were rebuilt in 1978/79 to FP10’s for MBTA as follows:
#812A to MBTA #1104 - Since Scrapped
#801B to MBTA #1105 - Since Scrapped
#800A to MBTA #1101 - Survives as SAL #4033 at Gold Coast Railway Museum
#805A to MBTA #1100 - Survives as San Luis & Rio Grande #1100 in Alamosa, CO

Not sure what happened to the ALCO’s in Photo 2.

The two ex IC E Units in Photo 3 along with perhaps another, were used to jump-start an E Unit rebuild program for NJDOT in 1978. Basically, ICG ended up with two or three NJDOT E Units that were subsequently scrapped.

The first unit in photo 3 is IC E10A 2024, which suffered minor damage in the derailment at Salem, IL in 1971. It was moved to Paducah and placed in storage, where it would sit for another ten years before being scrapped.

With neither a road number nor identifying details visible, the second unit could be one of the 3 units that were rebuilt for NJDOT, or it could be another of the handful of E8As and E9As that were still stored at Paducah in 1977.

NJDOT traded E8A's 4267, 4285, and 4324 to ICG in exchange for the 3 aforementioned rebuilt E8As. The NJDOT E8s were stored at Paducah until they were finally scrapped in 1981.
