Chicago Trip 1982 Part 10 BRC Clearing yard
Author: sig292

Here are some more slide scans of my June 1982 Chicago trip. These were all shot at the Belt Railway of Chicago's Clearing yard in Bedford Park.

Photo 1. Belt Rwy. of Chicago locomotives around the turntable. Unless I'm looking in the wrong place on Google maps, it appears this turntable has been removed.

Were the BN Alcos hangar queens to provide parts for the BRC 424's?

No, they were stored and later prepped for Kyle Railway....

The turntable was removed about four years ago. It's is no longer needed because to turn a locomotive it is easier to use the wye under the hump. In regard to the locomotives stored on the old roundhouse tracks, many were refurbished and painted by the BRC and then placed into storage. When the economy improved they were put back into use.

More than likely this was the job that delivered to B&OCT's Barr Yard. The reason is because that caboose was used daily on this run. In fact, the cabooses were "owned" (assigned) to particular conductors---hence the high seniority guys who stayed on the same job kept their same caboose!

Also of note in the first photo is tool car #93 which is painted bright red behind the locomotive on the far right turntable track. It was a former troop transport car with windows sheet-metaled over....
