New Castle, Pennsylvania - B&O 4043
Author: refarkas

B&O 4043 with a Reading ALCO as third unit was taken in February 1973.
I believe this was taken in New Castle, Pennsylvania, but I'm not certain.
(Thanks to cr7998 for a definitive answer as to where this was taken.)

Bob, excellent photo. I love the leader unit. Plus a bonus Reading. But I don't think this was Feb 2003.

How true. What's thirty years in the scheme of things?

Good shot, definitely New Castle PA. OA Tower is just to the right, barely visible. Train is eastbound, crossing the P&LE branch into downtown New Castle. Authority over the diamond was controlled by a tilting target signal, not visible in this photo. The CPL in the photo is a block signal and did not provide authority over the diamond. I believe the tower closed in 1982. This photo was taken in an era when it was much easier to wander around railroad property. In the 1980's and beyond, this location would have been off-limits unless one had permission.

An interesting action snow photo.
The numbers of both B&O units end in 3.
#4043 was a GP40, and #7493 was a SD40.
Great post.

Train could have been the BO/RDG.CNJ 'New Yorker' or NYKR, which was a priority mixed carload and intermodal train at the time from Chicago to Jersey City. RDG and CNJ power would get into loco consists at that time.

Great shot. I saw Reading GP 30's and GP 35's down here in the Grafton area but never any Alco's
