Nostalgia & History > San Jose aerial view of yards 1940. Roundhouse sign?Date: 03/16/18 17:52 San Jose aerial view of yards 1940. Roundhouse sign? Author: KMiddlebrook The landscape has significantly changed in 78 years.
Included is a close up detail of the San Jose Roundhouse. The "Roundhouse" sign is visible on the western wall of the roundhouse helping narrow the installation time between 1938 and 1940. My working assumption is the sign was informally installed as a marker for passenger trains on the newly routed mainline. The mainline relocation opened in December 1935. Shortly after the structure was donated by Southern Pacific to Santa Clara County for inclusion in a museum, the sign was removed in March 1994 by persons unknown. Its fate remains a mystery. If anyone knows the current whereabouts of the sign, please PM me. Thanks, Ken Date: 03/16/18 19:12 Re: San Jose aerial view of yards 1940. Roundhouse sign? Author: patd3985 I was there in '92 and it was still there. I thought about inquiring how to achieve it "But....I got stoned and I missed it!"

I have never believed that it is missing— I think it is just biding its time until the museum is built and will return in a cloud of glory and publicity! :-) C Carol Voss Bakersfield, CA Date: 03/17/18 10:20 Re: San Jose aerial view of yards 1940. Author: Matt_Gidley Can;t say for sure, but when I was a kid in the now ancient 90's I heard that a sign painter that went to my church named Norm Hollingsworth had painted the sign. He was an old-school hand painter who did a lot of bsuiness signs in SJ back in the day. I hope the sign resurfaces if they ever rebuild the roundhouse.
