Boxcar fun (GN - Milwaukee Road)
Author: Korigaoka1811

1 -- From the ever-interesting scrap-line at Pacific Junction, Iowa, 1984.

2 -- Another big GN boxcar on a freight train at San Bernardino in 1978.

3 -- This one is a bit of a puzzle to me. Even though this car is lead and followed by what appears to be hi-cube boxcars, it still looks like it has a lower-profile than a standard boxcar. Could this be an old passenger-express car now hauling general freight? Maybe a Milwaukee Road expert can let me know. Either way it is unique in my modest photo collection. San Bernardino, 1978.

I am not an expert but here's my educated guess. The Milwaukee car looks to be a reefer. Milwaukee reefers usually
had URTX reporting marks and this looks like the Milwaukee bought the car from URTX and re-stenciled it. As I said,
this is an educated guess and I can be corrected on it.

Most ice reefers were not as tall as standard boxcars (although this looks like a bunkerless reefer, i.e. an insulated boxcar). I agree that this car is probably ex-URTX. The extra-wide door and unusually narrow side panels help make the proportions look a little wonky.

Thanks CPR_4000 & Nick. Your ideas makes sense. I did see some URTX reefers in South Omaha in the mid-70s and this one does fit into the family.

If you look closely on the lower right hand side in the grim you can see the REFRIGERATOR marking on it. Nice catch that would be a fun one to model!
