Nostalgia & History > Looking for Nerska JunctionDate: 04/24/18 16:36 Looking for Nerska Junction Author: SP2541 This is from the Historic American Engineering Record at the Library of Congress. The caption reads, "Chicago & Western Indiana Railroad Bridge, Spanning Sanitary & Ship Canal at Nerska Junction, Chicago, Cook County, IL." Could anyone possibly give a better location, nowhere can I find Nerska Junction?
Thanks in advance Date: 04/24/18 16:57 Re: Looking for Nerska Junction Author: Englewood This is the Belt Railway of Chicago bridge over the Sanitary Ship Canal.
Go to Google Maps and enter "4000 South Cicero Avenue Chicago Illinois. The bridge is about 600 feet east of there. The BRC was built by the Chicago and Western Indiana and operated as a division of it until the BRC became a separate company in the 1960's (?) Nerska is the interlocking where the BRC crosses the AT&SF. The location is known as Nerska on the ATSF (BNSF) and Lemoyne on the BRC. The Lemoyne interlocking is controlled by the BRC train dispatcher and also includes the crossing of the ex-GM&O and the BRC. To the BRC the entire plant is known as Lemoyne. It is also known as Lemoyne on the GM&O (CN). The bridge is on the north side of all the diamonds. The BRC bridge is a swing bridge but is currently stationary with no facilities to open it. The picture is looking north. The AT&SF crossing is behind the photographer. In the far distance to the left of the tracks can be seen the clock (?) tower of the once famous Western Electric Hawthorne Works. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 04/24/18 17:09 by Englewood.
