What was MILW X900271 (photo 3) used for? Transfer caboose? Looks like it was made from a steam engine tender.

It is a flanger with a set of blades which drop down between the rails to remove the snow below the tops of the rails. This one only works in a single direction while others had two sets of blades and were bidirectional.

These flangers were recycled from steam engine tenders by the ever resourceful Milwaukee Road.

ATMX cars were for the Atomic Energy Commission. These were just gondolas with very thick sides and ends. AEC used them to haul barrels of low level nuclear waste such as rags and cans of liquids to storage. The MILW moved the cars regularly to Hanford, WA.

Milwaukee X416 is in MOW service in this shot. It's one of the former branchline combines homebuilt
by the Milwaukee and a fairly rare car. Thanks for posting.
