Scenes from Corbin Ky, L&N Alco heaven in 1979
Author: Roadjob

Like many fans of my era, I was an Alcophile. I searched them out religiously, and fortunately, there were still pockets of them in the east, as the 70s drew to a close. D&H was still Alco equipped thanks to Lehigh Valley's C420s being put on the roster after Conrail's formation. Unfortunately, the C628s were gone by then but D&H retained some of their smaller Alcos that they had originally bought. They also had some chop nosed reengined RS3s which were an interesting touch.

But the king of Alcos in the east was L&N, now officially Family Lines at that point. The Alcos were abundant in eastern Kentucky coal fields, and Corbin was the base of operations for that region. Alcos of all sizes congregated at Corbin, so a day there was a dream come true for an Alco aficionado.

Great stuff as usual. I noticed that C628 in the last photo is numbered 7517. I believe this unit is one of the ones that came over from the SCL. Could not find a 7517 on anybody's roster. The SCL C628's were numbered in the 2200's and the L&N's were numbered in the 1400's like in the 2nd to last photo. Was 7517 a Family Lines assigned number? Just curious as like Roadjob I am an Alcophile and I don't ever recall seeing an L&N C628 numbered in the 7500's.

Wonderful pix! They bring back lots of old memories. I remember the old Corbin shop well. The people there were always welcoming of fans.

You are correct, 7517 is one of the ACL/SCL C628's.

Another interesting catch is in the first shot.  1277 is once of two ex P&N/SCL C420's that was transferred to the L&N at the same time.
