Interestingly, a Civil War battle was fought near here, leading to the establishment of Fort Bowie

But, interestingly, it was not between the Union and The Confederates. It was established after skirmishes between The Union and the Chiricahua Apaches. The only battle between the North and South was at Picacho Peak.
