Those lower panels had a habit of rusting out at the bottom. Panel replacement was a fairly common thing.
They're just a sandwich of two sheets of sheet metal with plywood in the middle. Plywood did a great job of holding moisture.

Especially when those troughs next to the walkway (between the engine and the side panels) fills with sand and other debris. They hold in the moisture causing the side panels to start rusting out.
