Early Amtrak -- The Rainbow Days -- Rick Burn
Author: MartyBernard

Rick Burn was out there with his camera back when Amtrak had none of its own equipment.  We called them the rainbow days because trains could have diesels and cars of any and every color.  Here are some of Rick's rainbows.

1. Amtrak's California Zephyr with BN 9965 on the Zephyr Track at Hinsdale, IL in December 1972.

2. One of Amtrak's St. Louis to Milwaukee train with Milwaukee 31A at Glenview, IL in September 1972.

3. Amtrak's Empire Builder with BN 9943 at Glenview, IL in December 1972.

I agree. Not a single one of those labeled "December" are typical of Illinois in December.

Nice shots!!! On BN RR Chicago and La Crosse based train crews worked between Chicago and La Crosse.  Chicago based engine crews worked to and from La Crosse, WI.in the top shot.

Bottom five shots. Old Milwaukee Road RR T&E crews, based in Milwaukee, WI and worked to and from Chicago.

They are probably old shots from October but the film was processed in December.
