Marty,

It is important to note that Photo 5 is of the Madison to Portage freight train is going past the Chicago and North Western Passenger station in Madison which lost passenger service in 1964.  Train service left from the Johnson Street yard until September, 1965.

As for the Milwaukee Road, their Milwaukee to Madison trains (dropped in 1957) and their Madison to Portage trains stopped about 200 feet south of the picture at a station called Franklin Street.   This was popular with lobbyists and legislators who could walk down the hill from Capitol Square to the Franklin Street Station.

Milwaukee Road to Chicago trains did not go near Franklin Street Station.

In picture #2, I see two signals protecting the diamond from EB/SB Milwaukee traffic and the IC gate...what is the fourth piece of equipment?  It appears to be a tall pole with a lantern on top?

Also, for a year in college I lived in the house just out of frame to the right in image #5...much better than my time living on the IC line off Commonwealth!

Nice shots! Old C&NW RR T&E crews on that passenger train in photo 4, based in Madison, WI and worked to and from Chicago.
