Nostalgia & History > Akron's Unknown Railfan - Johnstown's Inclined PlaneDate: 08/04/18 12:04 Akron's Unknown Railfan - Johnstown's Inclined Plane Author: refarkas Here are three more photos of/from Johnstown, Pennsylvania's inclined plane. These were taken in September 1966.
1.) Looking to the top of the inclined plane. 2.) Looking towards the bottom of the plane. 3.) The city of Johnstown as seen from the plane. Notice the heavy industry and the railroads. Bob Date: 08/04/18 12:19 Re: Akron's Unknown Railfan - Johnstown's Inclined Plane Author: santafe199 Interesting stuff! I wonder how many of those 5 people looking down the incline have secret thoughts of being a witness to some mechanical disaster? (sorry, couldn't help it). I've never seen a photo of Johnstown from up so high. It sure helps when trying imagine the horror of being trapped & washed away during the famous Johnstown Flood way back when...

Here is a contemporary view taken with a cell phone in September 2015. Some changes, but the industrial buildings are still there (but likely much less activity). 1) Cropped photo covering roughly the same area shown in Akron's Unknown Railfan image. 2) The full view from the top of the Johnstown Incline. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 08/04/18 15:21 by RuleG. Date: 08/04/18 15:25 Re: Akron's Unknown Railfan - Johnstown's Inclined Plane Author: refarkas Thanks for sharing the modern views. I'm surprised how much is still the same.
Bob Date: 08/04/18 16:02 Re: Akron's Unknown Railfan - Johnstown's Inclined Plane Author: Lackawanna484 In both pictures the steep canyon of the Conemaugh River is visible in the background.
When the sportsmen's dam let go upriver, the miles long wall of water scoured everything in its path. These particular photos show the inclined plane from a perspective thtat I've never seen before.
