Artsy Fartsy Low angle shot of SD&AE's El Cajon Local 15 mi NE of Downtown San Diego, CA...This is just north of Fletcher Parkway in El Cajon, near the Bowling Alley...Think there were at least 3 or 4 industries here served...there was a siding and 2 spurs here, one west and one east...judging by the position of the caboose, it's possible on this day they were going to uncouple the hack from power, and run power around to the other end, and head "back to town " (yard next to Petco Park now)...I can still hear those SW-8's revving up in my mind...Steve

Great photo Steve! Thanks for sharing!

The 1118 was one of the 2 SW8s that were scrapped in
San Diego by Kyle, who had purchased all 6 SW8s that
MTDB acquired with the purchase of the SD&AE from SP!

The 1110 was the second unit scrapped locally, the other 4 were
shipped out by Kyle on heavy 6 axle depressed center flatcars.

Three of those have been scrapped at different locations and the
1115 still exists today. It was last on the Yreka Western!

Thanks again for another great shot Steve. I can still hear those horns in my head, many days we could hear them coming back down Imperial Ave in the afternoon at my house about 3.5 miles away up in Lomita Village.  As I have told you more than once these were the locomotives that gave me the railroad bug.

As a aside, anyone remember what date it was when they moved the equipment from La Mesa? I remember passing them on Imperial while riding the school bus (maybe 1980 ish?) some sunny school day afternoon and hearing and seeing the racket from the shay going down the tracks in the consist was something  that's always stuck with me.

That was about 1983, just before the museum assembled the
"First Great Freight" to move the first load of 19 pieces to the
property in Campo!

Thanks, I hadn't realized it was that late until I just sat and thought about the kids I was riding with and what school I was coming from and that was the perfect time frame.
